More than 7,000 Belarusians contacted the traffic police to have their personal mobility devices checked. As a result, 3,500 electric mopeds and motorcycles were registered. Viktor Rotchenkov, head of the main traffic police department of Belarus’s Interior Ministry, said this on STV.
“A year ago, we discussed that perhaps relatively few people would come to us, but a great many did — more than 7,000 citizens with their vehicles, to determine what they were: a moped, a motorcycle or a personal mobility device. As of today, 3,500 such vehicles have been registered with the State Automobile Inspectorate. Many people have seen the green license plates installed on them. We are still expecting about 1,500 more — these will be registered under the simplified procedure,” he said.
As a reminder, under the legislation, personal mobility devices include scooters, unicycles and other vehicles if their speed does not exceed 25 km/h. Otherwise, they are classified as motor vehicles subject to registration, and a driving license of the appropriate category is required to operate them.
“It is still too early to say that everyone has made a final determination. The year has passed, all the necessary explanations were provided, and we registered those who contacted us. Those who chose to do so or received information that their vehicle was a personal mobility device operate them in the same way as bicycles,” Rotchenkov explained.
