Tsikhanouskaya Meets Latvian President to Discuss Sanctions and Support for Political Prisoners

During a working visit to Latvia, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with President Edgars Rinkēvičs. The leader of the democratic forces thanked Latvia for its consistent support for Belarusians and democratic forces, solidarity on the issue of political prisoners, its contribution to the International Humanitarian Fund and its principled position toward the Lukashenka regime.

The sides discussed the need to maintain and strengthen pressure on the regime through sanctions policy and the closing of sanction-evasion schemes, humanitarian support for released political prisoners, Belarus’s role in Russia’s war against Ukraine, international coordination within the Nordic-Baltic Eight format and at UN platforms, as well as support for the Belarusian diaspora, national identity and the Belarusian language in Latvia.

“It is very important for us to feel that Latvia stands alongside us — both in supporting political prisoners and in our shared work for security in the region. A democratic Belarus is part of a secure Europe,” Tsikhanouskaya said.
