Скан відэа Рамана Шэля.
Artist Ales Pushkin died on July 11 at the age of 57 in the intensive care unit of a Hrodna hospital, where he had been taken from prison. The artist had a perforated ulcer and did not receive timely medical assistance. According to human rights activists and his relatives, he was taken to hospital too late.
In late March 2021, Pushkin returned to Belarus from Kyiv, knowing that a criminal case had been opened against him. Soon after his arrival, he was detained and sentenced to five years in a high-security penal colony over a portrait of anti-Soviet partisan Yauhen Zhykhar, which Pushkin exhibited in Hrodna, and a performance he staged in Kyiv.
His art is difficult to separate from his life, which resembled an endless performance. He was a performance artist, painter, graphic artist, icon painter and restorer. He was arrested while working on the restoration of the palace in Zhylichy.
A major art album devoted to Ales Pushkin is scheduled for release in autumn 2026.
The artist’s memorial page is also being expanded. It currently features about 300 works by Ales Pushkin. The archive section contains interviews with the artist, research texts, memoirs and materials about his work.
