Three-Quarters of International Road Freight Transport by Belarusian Carriers Is Accounted for by Russia

Russia’s share in international road freight transport carried out by Belarusian transport companies amounts to 70–75%. This was stated in an interview with SB.by by Director General of the Belarusian Association of International Road Carriers (BAMAP) Aliaksandr Karpuk.

“Today, our eastern neighbours are for us not only the strongest trading partner but also the largest transport market for domestic carriers. According to 2025 statistics, it accounts for 70–75% of all our transport operations.”, he said.

He also said that Belarusian carriers face difficulties in developing the Chinese market. In 2022, China allocated 1,000 permits to Belarusian companies. The annual quota now stands at 20,000, and work is underway to double it. However, the Chinese side provides additional advantages to its own carriers.

“At the same time, there are a number of difficulties. For example, Chinese carriers can load significantly more goods onto their vehicles than we can. As a result, the cost of transporting the same cargo to the border with Kazakhstan or Russia is completely different for Chinese carriers and for us. Under such conditions, it is difficult for us to compete with China’s national carriers on their territory.”, he said.

According to him, Belarusian carriers are finding ways to optimise costs, including carrying out several consecutive shipments across Russia in order to reach the Chinese border and collect the required cargo there. Difficulties are also created by time zone differences and the low capacity of crossing points on the Russian-Chinese border.
