Syrian With a Netherlands Residence Permit Tried to Climb Border Fence From Poland Into Belarus

Polish border guards detained a man who entered the border zone and attempted to climb the fence from Poland into Belarus.

According to the Podlasie Border Guard Unit, the man was spotted by surveillance cameras and detained shortly afterwards.

“It was established that he is a Syrian citizen holding a Netherlands residence permit. The man said he had travelled by bus from Berlin to Warsaw, then from Warsaw to Białystok, and from Białystok by train to Kuźnica Białostocka. The foreign national stated that his destination was Belarus,” the Polish Border Guard said.

The man’s motives for trying to enter Belarus were not disclosed. Most border violators usually attempt to cross from Belarus into Poland.

However, this is not the first such case. In May this year, Lithuanian border guards detained a 44-year-old Polish citizen who arrived at the border fence by bicycle carrying a large amount of cash and attempted to climb over it using a ladder in order to enter Belarus.

Judging by the video, the Syrian was far less prepared to scale the border fence than the Polish man.
