State Propaganda Responds to the Deterioration of Karatkevich’s House in Rahachou

The house in Rahachou where Uladzimir Karatkevich lived and worked is falling into disrepair. A Belarusian woman, Yulia, who recently visited the site, wrote about it in a post. The state-run newspaper Gomelskaya Pravda responded, describing the Instagram post as “a coordinated campaign with political undertones” and concern for the writer’s legacy as “a tool in someone’s dirty hands, a club in political battles.”

It should be recalled that Karatkevich’s house is privately owned, and the local authorities have for many years been unable to resolve the issue of acquiring the property from the heirs. Seven years ago, the authorities promised to establish a museum there, but the wooden house does not even have the status of a historical and cultural heritage site.

The house was built in 1914 by the writer’s grandfather, Vasil Hrynkevich. Karatkevich admitted that nowhere else did he write as well as he did there. It was in Rahachou that his key works were written or conceived. He began writing his famous novel Ear of Rye Beneath Your Sickle there.

While this article was being prepared, Gomelskaya Pravda reported that the fence around Karatkevich’s house had been repaired.
