A Belarusian delegation is observing parliamentary elections in Myanmar. The delegation includes Deputy Chair of the Central Election Commission Aliaksei Bashan, MP Aliaksandr Shpakouski, and member of the Council of the Republic Siarhei Mialeshkin.
According to the Central Election Commission, the delegation met with the leadership of the Myanmar Institute for Strategic Studies. The talks focused on the regional situation, the country’s domestic political situation and the conduct of the electoral campaign. Members of the delegation shared Belarus’s “experience in conducting election campaigns”.
Elections in Myanmar will begin on December 28. They will be held in three stages. Voting will also take place on January 11 and 25. Members of the House of Nationalities, the House of Representatives of the Union Assembly, and fourteen state and regional legislative assemblies are to be elected.
These elections will be the first since the military coup that took place in 2021. Regular elections were scheduled for 2023 but did not take place due to the state of emergency.
