Seven Criminal Cases Opened Over Bribes in Water Supply Sector

The Financial Investigations Department of the State Control Committee for Brest Region uncovered corruption in the water supply sector.

Bribes were paid to representatives of state-owned enterprises in exchange for selecting a company supplying imported pumping equipment and components, as well as for ensuring timely payment for them.

A representative of a Brest-based organisation was caught red-handed while receiving a bribe of 5,000 euros. Investigators later established 11 more instances in which he had received bribes. In addition, cases of bribery involving six more representatives of district organisations in Brest and Minsk regions were uncovered.

“The director of this private company approved a list of state-owned enterprises indicating specific bribe amounts for their officials. Based on this list, he cashed out part of the dividends received and, through his subordinates, passed the money to officials of state-owned enterprises,” the State Control Committee said.

The total amount of bribes exceeded 80,000 Belarusian roubles. Seven criminal cases have been opened.
