A Belarusian man died on the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps on the border with Italy. The accident occurred on July 12.
According to Valais cantonal police, two climbers died while descending the Matterhorn via the Hörnli ridge at an altitude of about 4,030 metres at around 11 a.m. on Sunday. A third climber witnessed their fall and called rescuers.
Israeli outlet Ynet reports that the climbers who died were 32-year-old Israeli Alam Fares and a Belarusian man whose name has not been disclosed.
Fares’ relatives told the outlet that he had set off for the mountains on Wednesday, July 8, with his Belarusian climbing partner. They safely reached the summit and began their descent. After Fares failed to make contact for several hours, his friend raised the alarm and called rescuers.
“Several eyewitnesses who were there said they saw two people fall because of a rockfall”, the Israeli man’s uncle said.
