The Human Rights Center Viasna has learned new details about the “EHU case.” Security forces are interested in tuition payments made to the university since 2016.
“Unidentified persons, no earlier than April 30, 2016, provided and collected funds, securities and other property for the deliberate support of the extremist activities of the extremist organization ‘European Humanities University,’ recognized as such by a decision of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus on April 14, 2026,” according to the resolution opening the criminal case.
In the Vitsyebsk region, security forces conducted searches at the homes of former EHU students who had either graduated from the university or left without completing their studies, according to Vitsebskaya Viasna. They were particularly interested in who had paid for the students’ education.
It should be recalled that the Supreme Court of Belarus designated the Vilnius-based European Humanities University and its affiliated entities as an “extremist organization.”
The Prosecutor General’s Office claims that the university trains Belarusian youth “to implement Western scenarios for transforming the political system, promoting so-called democratic values, and advancing ‘alternative’ interpretations of historical, cultural and other events.”
Human rights defenders previously reported the opening of a criminal case under an article covering assistance to and financing of “extremist activities.” As part of the investigation, searches are being carried out across the country at the homes of people connected to the university. Human rights defenders are aware of more than 30 searches.
