Ryzhankou Insists on Talks With Lithuanian Foreign Ministry

Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhankou continues to insist on negotiations with Lithuania at the level of foreign ministries to resolve border-related issues. He made the statement during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following the meeting of the Belarus–Russia Foreign Ministries’ collegium.

“This is not so much Lithuania’s position as that of certain politicians currently in power. Their approach is situational, emotionally uncontrolled and, to some extent, even hysterical. It is clear that these politicians are guided not by the interests of their people, their business community or their country — let alone ours or that of the EU — but by certain directives from what we like to call the Brussels or Washington regional committees.

If these politicians actually listened to their citizens, and if their further stay in office depended on it, they would urgently begin negotiations with the Belarusian side, as we propose, and would settle the entire range of issues related to the Belarus–Lithuania border.

The measures being taken today are temporary and may bring some order to the border only partially and for a short time. We — and the president — advocate for a final settlement of all problematic border issues so that its functioning becomes stable and predictable for the citizens and businesses of both countries, as well as for third-country users of this border. That is our proposal. Unfortunately, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry is not yet ready for negotiations of this kind”, he said.

Earlier today, Alyaksandr Lukashenka also raised the issue of relations with Lithuania during a report by Security Council State Secretary Alyaksandr Valfovich, who, according to Lukashenka, met with Lithuanian truck drivers stranded in Belarus after two crossing points were reopened by Lithuania.
