Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stated that no negotiations are being held with the Belarusian side. The head of the Lithuanian government expects Belarus to take measures to stop the flights of balloons that have disrupted operations at Vilnius Airport. Only after that, she said, could discussions about reopening the border begin.
“Indeed, all diplomatic channels have been activated to resolve the situation. The borders with Belarus were not closed without reason, but because of a hybrid attack. As soon as we receive assurances from the Belarusian side that these attacks are under control and we have no issues in this regard, we will make a decision to reopen the border.
We are not holding talks. We are sending a clear signal that the borders were closed due to the hybrid attacks that took place. Once this process is over and once the Belarusian side assures us that it will not continue, we will make the corresponding positive decisions,” Delfi quoted Ruginienė as saying.
At the same time, Ruginienė noted that there are some positive signs.
“Airports are not being closed as they were at the beginning; the coordination algorithm is functioning smoothly and effectively. And the number of these balloons is not as large as we recorded earlier (…). There are positive signs, but much more work needs to be done,” she said.
Earlier, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhankou stated that Minsk insists on the full reopening of the border between the two countries. He also noted that a proposal for negotiations to resolve the situation had been sent to the Lithuanian side.
Yesterday, Ruginienė confirmed that a letter from the Belarusian side regarding the start of negotiations had been received. She said it would be reviewed.
