The United States has not asked Lithuania to consider the possibility of resuming potash transit, but if such a request is made, it will be examined, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė said.
“There has never been any request for us to consider [resuming] transit through Lithuania, but if such a request comes — we will consider it. When that step comes, then we will be able to assess and speak. Right now this is not even being discussed,” ELTA news agency quoted Ruginienė as saying.
Ruginienė stressed that relations between Vilnius and Washington remain good, and that U.S. diplomatic support in addressing Belarus’s hybrid attacks is very important.
The Lithuanian prime minister also noted the effectiveness of measures adopted by Lithuanian authorities to combat smuggling. She said the fight against smuggling would become even more active.
The United States has suspended sanctions on the Belarusian potash sector. The Office of Foreign Assets Control has issued a licence allowing transactions with Belaruskalij, BKK and their subsidiaries. The European Union, however, has not lifted its sanctions on Belarusian potash, and its transit through the EU remains prohibited.
