Prize-Winning Vocalist and Choir Singer Sent to Penal Colony for Protest Participation

Prize-winning vocalist and choir singer Daniel-Landsey Keita has been sentenced to a penal colony for participating in protests, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.

The criminal case was heard at the beginning of the year in the Moscow District Court of Minsk, but the outcome became known to human rights defenders only now. Daniel was charged under Part 1 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code. The case was presided over by Judge Tatsiana Pirozhnikava. He was sentenced to two years of imprisonment. He is being held at Penal Colony IK-17 in Shklou.

Daniel-Landsey Keita’s detention became known in June last year. In a “repentance video,” he “confessed” to having taken part in protest actions in 2020, posting negative comments about police officers and government representatives, and expressing a negative attitude toward Russian servicemen fighting in Ukraine.

It is known that Daniel is a first-degree laureate of the international Feodor Chaliapin Young Vocalists Competition.
