Lithuanian Police to Take Over Security of Tsikhanouskaya, BNS Reports

Lithuanian police will take over the security of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. This will happen in the coming days. The information was confirmed to BNS by Police Department spokesperson Ramūnas Matonis.

“I can confirm that the police are taking over Tsikhanouskaya’s security,” the agency quoted him as saying.

According to him, this will take place “in the coming days.” Matonis added that information about the security arrangements for Tsikhanouskaya will not be made public.

Until now, Tsikhanouskaya has been protected by the State Leadership Security Service. Plans to lower her level of protection became known in the autumn. At the time, the decision was justified by a reduction in threats against her and by technical reasons.

Against the backdrop of the lowered level of protection, the operating regime of Tsikhanouskaya’s physical office was adjusted. Media outlets also reported on a possible relocation of the office to Poland. A week ago, Tsikhanouskaya’s chief adviser Franak Viačorka, commenting on publications about a possible move, said that the office was operating as usual, security for the democratic forces’ leader had been restored and has remained in place since then, and the new system had never been introduced.

“It is too early to talk about any changes or relocation. I understand that there is a lot of speculation. But there is no need to dramatize,” he said at the time.
