Poland expects a decision on the establishment of a permanent US military base in the country to be made by the end of the year. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz told wnp.pl.

According to the minister, the decision will be made after the Pentagon completes its review of the deployment of US troops in Europe. Kosiniak-Kamysz believes that documents outlining future approaches to the US military presence on the continent will be ready in November, and the White House could make a decision on the base in Poland the following month.

Kosiniak-Kamysz also named four possible locations for the US base: Wrocław, Poznań, Bydgoszcz and Szczecin. All four are west of the Vistula River, as requested by the US side.

All four cities are already important military hubs for the US and NATO. Poznań hosts the forward headquarters of the US Army’s V Corps, airport infrastructure is being developed in Wrocław, Bydgoszcz is an important NATO hub, and Szczecin is home to the headquarters of the Multinational Corps.

Establishing the base will require substantial investment, estimated at around 15 billion zlotys (approximately $3.9 billion at the current exchange rate). The number of troops has not yet been determined, but the base is expected to accommodate up to 5,000 military personnel. Taking their family members and other staff into account, infrastructure will need to be built to accommodate 25,000 people.
