Political Prisoners, Opening of Democratic Forces Office and Legalisation Issues Discussed During Tsikhanouskaya’s Meetings in Spain

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held a series of meetings with politicians during her visit to Spain on 6-8 April, the Office of Tsikhanouskaya reported.

At a meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the parties discussed the situation of Belarusian political prisoners, interaction with the United States, the situation in Ukraine and relations between the Belarusian democratic forces and the Ukrainian authorities, as well as the situation of Belarusians in Spain.

“The prime minister knows our problems very well and assured me that Spain’s position remains unchanged. Spain clearly distinguishes between Belarusians and the regime, Belarus and Russia, and will continue to support those who have found safe refuge here in Spain. We spoke a lot about political prisoners, Ukraine, relations with the United States, and of course what else we can do together with Spain,” Tsikhanouskaya said after the meeting.

At a meeting with Senate Speaker Pedro Rollán Ojeda, the discussion focused on creating a parliamentary group “For a Democratic Belarus”, support for political prisoners and international cooperation. The sides also considered a Belarus-Venezuela-Spain cooperation format.

“Today we heard that the Senate of Spain is open to cooperation with the Belarusian democratic forces and is ready to take part in future parliamentary meetings. Thank you to the Senate of Spain and the speaker for supporting Belarus — this meeting showed that we have a common understanding and readiness to work together,” Tsikhanouskaya said.

With Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the discussion covered Spain’s contribution to the International Humanitarian Fund, with the country allocating 50,000 euros, as well as issues related to apostilles and certificates of no criminal record. A separate discussion focused on the official opening of the Office of Democratic Forces in Madrid. Its opening this year was confirmed. Tatsiana Marynich was nominated to head the office.
