Polish Border Guards Seize Contraband Belarusian Cigarettes in Białystok

Polish border guards seized a shipment of contraband Belarusian cigarettes in Białystok, believed to have been delivered by air from Belarusian territory. A Lithuanian citizen and a Polish woman of Belarusian origin were detained.

According to the Podlasie Border Guard Department, during operations in one of the city’s residential districts, border guards noticed vehicles that had previously been linked to smuggling. Officers seized 217,000 cigarettes bearing Belarusian excise stamps from the cars, with an estimated value of around 224,000 zlotys.

During a search at the suspects’ place of residence, investigators found additional evidence of involvement in smuggling and seized 30,000 zlotys.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the seized goods were smuggled using unmanned aerial vehicles, and that the detained woman likely played a leading role in organising this criminal activity”, the statement said.

The detainees have been charged with smuggling and other offences. They have been placed in custody for three months.
