Construction has begun on an additional barrier along the Polish-Belarusian border designed to reinforce the existing fence, RMF FM reported.
The new structure consists of a four-meter-high fence running along the technical road and topped with barbed wire. On the forest side, a two-meter fence is being installed to protect animals from injury, along with coils of barbed wire.
Construction began simultaneously in five locations. Materials were purchased by the Border Guard, while military engineering units are carrying out the work on sections identified by border guards. Commander of the Podlasie Border Guard unit General Sławomir Klekotka said the most vulnerable sections, where illegal crossing attempts are most likely, had been selected first.
According to him, the new barrier will slow down attempts to cross the border illegally and give border guards time to respond.
“There will be a very high chance of stopping these people and confiscating their tools, because all of this will already be happening entirely on the Polish side”, he said.
The barrier is planned to be built along the entire 186-km section of the border in the Podlasie region. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of spring.
