In the village of Slabodka in the Astravets District, near the approach to the Katlouka–Lavoryshki border checkpoint on the Belarus–Lithuania border, a monument to the rebels of 1863 has been removed. The monument, shaped like a large sword planted halfway into the ground, was installed in 2013 for the 150th anniversary of the uprising, according to the Telegram channel Spadchyna.
The monument was likely destroyed as early as 2023 or earlier. Our newsroom received photos of the site where the monument had stood, dated February and March 2024.
The sword featured two crosses (Catholic and Orthodox), the Pahonia coat of arms, and on the blade was engraved the password of the scythemen: “Whom do you love? – Belarus! – Then we are united…”.
Previously, pro-Russian activists had spoken out against the monument.
It is known that the monument had been installed on private land and with private funds.
