Passenger Hits 66-Year-Old Belarusian Taxi Driver With Bottle in Wroclaw

A 66-year-old Belarusian citizen working as a taxi driver in Wroclaw was attacked at work. A 23-year-old assailant has been detained, the Wroclaw police department said.

“According to the victim, the 23-year-old man, upon hearing his Eastern European accent, began using offensive language related to his nationality. However, the attacker did not stop there and struck the driver on the head with a glass bottle,” the police said in a statement.

Police quickly identified and detained the attacker. A video recording made by a witness, who also assisted the taxi driver, helped with the investigation.

The detained man was charged with an assault motivated by the victim’s nationality. Under a prosecutor’s decision, the suspect will remain under police supervision.

“Police remind citizens that no national, cultural or linguistic differences should be a reason for aggression or humiliation. Any such behavior is treated extremely seriously and results in criminal prosecution, and law enforcement agencies have announced decisive measures in response,” police added.
