Polish President Karol Nawrocki said he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit on Tuesday. It was the first conversation between the two presidents since Polish-Ukrainian relations deteriorated following the decision to name one of Ukraine’s military units after the heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). In response, Nawrocki stripped Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. The Ukrainian president has also recently stopped travelling through Poland.
“We discussed the issues in a courteous manner; my position on matters related to the tensions in our bilateral relations remains unchanged, but this does not preclude our dialogue,” he said, according to PAP.
“It seems natural to me that neighbouring countries sharing a common enemy, the Russian Federation, remain in dialogue with one another despite certain bilateral disagreements,” Nawrocki added.
The Polish president did not disclose further details of his conversation with Zelenskyy.
