Minsk Residents Ask Lukashenka Not to Demolish Sheds, Authorities Cite Unsafe Condition and Improper Use

Residents of several apartment buildings in Minsk have appealed to Aliaksandr Lukashenka asking him not to demolish sheds located near buildings 20–40 on Sofyi Kovalevskoy Lane and 24–25 on Popov Street. A video was published by the Instagram account @belarus_okay.

According to the residents, on April 3, 2026, the Moscow District housing maintenance service posted notices on the structure ordering people to clear out the sheds ahead of their planned demolition.

“We, the residents, oppose this decision,” they said in response.

The housing authority told them that they had no title documents for the sheds and therefore had no right to use them, while the Moscow District administration’s emergency commission declared the sheds dilapidated and in a dangerous condition.

The head of the Moscow District administration, Siarhei Rubanau, later responded to the appeal. According to him, the structure had originally been used to store firewood when the residential buildings were heated by stoves.

“At present, the city has switched the residential buildings to central heating and water supply. The original purpose has lost its relevance. Residents began using the facility as sheds, while serious violations involving unauthorized alterations have been recorded. Some of the sheds are already being used as garages, and the load-bearing capacity of the structure has been compromised,” he said.

The official added that following an inspection involving representatives of the Emergency Ministry, the hygiene center and the architecture department, the structure had been declared unsafe.

“There are numerous cracks and chips in the brickwork. The roof has damage to the rafter system and covering. A decision has been made to demolish it with subsequent restoration of the surrounding area. In addition, this facility is located on public land, and no title documents exist,” he commented.

According to him, when residents moved into the buildings they received warrants containing a clause allowing them to use the sheds for firewood storage, but not ownership rights.

“The district administration and housing service representatives repeatedly held meetings and discussions with residents on this issue, explaining all the measures being taken. The most important thing is to minimize the consequences of the unsafe condition and ensure residents’ safety,” Rubanau said.
