Authorities in Minsk have identified 26 priority locations at risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. Construction and installation work aimed at reducing the risk of flooding is already underway at seven of these sites, Minsk-Novosti reports.
Flood prevention measures were discussed at a working meeting chaired by Uladzimir Kukharau, head of the Minsk City Executive Committee.
According to Siarhei Paneu, director of the Hordarstroy municipal enterprise, the identified high-risk areas require different engineering solutions. These include installing additional stormwater inlets and emergency outlets, constructing new storm drainage networks, or increasing the capacity of existing ones.
“We are currently carrying out construction and installation work at seven of these locations. Defects that can be addressed by the operating organizations are being resolved as part of routine maintenance,” he said.
The meeting also reviewed the recent flooding of a roadway in the Minsk Mir residential and commercial development.
Kukharau instructed officials to strengthen oversight of stormwater inlets and drainage systems and to ensure they are cleaned of silt and sand deposits in a timely manner. According to him, the reconstruction of storm drainage systems should be completed within the established deadlines.
