Prosecutors have sent to court a criminal case against a 66-year-old resident of Brest District. He is charged with attempted murder committed with exceptional cruelty and the intentional destruction of another person’s passport (Part 1 of Article 14, Paragraph 6 of Part 2 of Article 139, and Article 378 of the Criminal Code).
According to the prosecution, the man, who was intoxicated, argued with his wife in November 2025. The woman said she was going to leave him and began walking out of the house. The man then doused her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire. The victim ran out of the house, trying to remove her clothes and extinguish her burning hair. The man then pushed her again and poured more flammable liquid on her.
Seeing his wife’s condition, the man took her handbag from her hands, removed her passport and, after walking into the yard, burned it.
According to the prosecutor’s office, concerned citizens extinguished the flames and provided the victim with medical assistance.
The 63-year-old victim suffered thermal burns covering 16% of her total body surface area, including 2% deep burns.
The accused remains in custody.
