The Mahiliou Regional Court found a 45-year-old resident of Mahiliou guilty of attempting to murder a woman. He was also charged with assaulting the victim’s mother.
According to the prosecution, in August last year the defendant nearly killed his 30-year-old partner during a jealous argument. He was intoxicated.
“The man displayed uncontrolled aggression and caused the woman particular suffering and torment: he brutally and severely beat her, strangled her, dragged her around the apartment by her hair, tried to force her head into the toilet, then poured water on her, stuffed liquid wallpaper into her mouth by force, smeared it over her face and head, prevented her from breathing, and also smashed a ceramic mug over her head.
After that, using his physical superiority, the aggressor broke the victim’s will to resist and threw her from the balcony of the second floor of an apartment building.
Pursuing his intention to kill his partner, the accused did not stop even when her mother intervened. When the woman tried to help her daughter and pull the accused away, he used physical violence against her.
After making sure that the victim had survived the fall, the man made a second attempt to throw her from the balcony. He ran outside, grabbed the beaten woman by the hair and dragged her back into the apartment by force, where he continued to beat her and again tried to throw her from a height,” the prosecution said.
The attacker was stopped by neighbours who managed to get into the apartment.
The man was sentenced to 15 years and 6 months in prison to be served in a high-security penal colony. In addition, compulsory treatment for chronic alcoholism was imposed. The court also granted the victim and her mother compensation for moral damages in the amount of 21,000 rubles.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed.
