Lukashenka’s Office Confirms Meeting With Coale

Alyaksandr Lukashenka met today with representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump’s team, led by U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale.

According to Lukashenka’s press service, the meeting took place at the Palace of Independence. Talks began today and will continue tomorrow. U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern Europe Chris Smith was also present.

“Today’s meeting, as usual, was held behind closed doors,” the press service said.

Lukashenka congratulated Coale on his appointment as U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus.

“You are now our main point of contact on Belarus. Tell Trump that we must do something about this. And we will,” he said.

Lukashenka also offered a positive assessment of Donald Trump’s actions.

“They say Trump likes flattery. But I am not flattering him. I want to say that lately I have liked his actions very much,” BelTA quoted him as saying. “We have many issues. The world is changing very quickly, new problems are emerging that we must discuss with you. And perhaps resolve some of them.”

Earlier today, Reform.news reported, citing several sources, that an official announcement on the release of more than 150 Belarusian political prisoners is expected in the coming hours.
