Aliaksandr Lukashenka, during a visit to Shklou District, commented on an agreement with Uzbekistan to attract migrant workers. He described a system already being introduced for Pakistani workers and said migration would also be monitored by aides.
“A decision has been made to develop a system and invite people from abroad to the country. Ukrainians have come, and many Russians are coming to work here. We recently held talks with Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and I made a proposal to him. We have a system: the embassy makes an initial assessment of who can come and who cannot. And here, the manager must determine how many people are needed and for which occupations. And he selects them. Workers will be needed. And we need them very much,” he said, according to his press service.
Lukashenka had previously said Belarus was ready to accept up to 150,000 workers from Pakistan. However, statistics show that only a small number of migrant workers have arrived. According to the Interior Ministry, 30,365 foreigners entered Belarus for work in the first six months of the year, including only 202 people from Pakistan. The largest group of migrants consisted of citizens of Turkmenistan, numbering 13,500. A total of 2,547 people arrived from Uzbekistan.
Lukashenka said foreign workers in Belarus were subject to strict controls.
“There must be a system. We have one. I established it. Only the manager hires them, and he is responsible for them. There must be order. It should not be done indiscriminately. Therefore, it must be selective and targeted. One, two, 10 or 20 people. As many as each employer needs. Personal responsibility. Aides will keep this under control,” he said.
