Lukashenka Congratulates Tokayev on Constitutional Referendum in Kazakhstan

Alyaksandr Lukashenka congratulated President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the successful holding of the nationwide referendum and expressed readiness to continue cooperation between Minsk and Astana.

In his message, Lukashenka described the referendum on constitutional amendments in Kazakhstan as a plebiscite.

“The results of the plebiscite have once again confirmed the high level of public trust in the course you are pursuing toward modernization of the country and strengthening statehood. They clearly demonstrated the unity of Kazakhstani society in its aspiration to build a ‘Just Kazakhstan’ and ensure its stable development,” the message said.

Lukashenka expressed confidence that implementing the principles enshrined in the new constitution would become the basis for Kazakhstan’s further prosperity, strengthening its role on the international stage and increasing the well-being of its citizens.

“Minsk consistently values relations of strategic partnership and alliance with Astana. I am convinced that our multifaceted cooperation, based on the principles of friendship, trust and mutual support, will continue to expand dynamically for the benefit of our two brotherly peoples,” Lukashenka said.

He wished Tokayev good health, inexhaustible energy and new achievements in his work, and peace and harmony to the people of Kazakhstan.

The constitutional referendum in Kazakhstan was held on March 15. Voter turnout reached 73%. A total of 87% of voters who came to polling stations supported the new constitution. The amendments предусматривают a transition to a unicameral parliament, the introduction of the position of vice president, the creation of the People’s Council of Kazakhstan, the закрепление of the tenge in the constitution, clarification of the status of the Russian language — from “equal with” to “alongside” Kazakh — and a ban on dual citizenship.
