On October 22, Aliaksandr Lukashenka met with Belarusian Defence Minister Viktar Khrenin and Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov.

He stressed that Belarus was fulfilling its obligations to Russia, including tasks related to border protection.

“There are many issues we need to discuss. Thank you for maintaining the joint force grouping that we formed together under the CSTO in the western direction, despite all the difficulties and challenges. The Belarusian army is fulfilling its role.

We are fulfilling all our obligations, both Russia’s obligations to Belarus and Belarus’s obligations to Russia. Our opponents (we probably do not have any particular enemies here yet) know this — they can see it. We have good cooperation with other agencies and in other areas as well. So you need not worry about our commitments to protecting the borders of our Union State,” Lukashenka was quoted as saying by his press service.

Lukashenka assured Belousov that the joint force grouping in the western direction was “in good order” and said Belarus was preparing for war. He stressed that the task of the Belarusian Armed Forces was to prevent external military aggression.

“You can see our actions, especially those of the Armed Forces. We are preparing for war, but doing everything possible to avoid it. Neither we nor you need it. But to prevent it from happening, we must be ready. That is why our joint force grouping in the western direction will always be needed. And it is in good order today,” he noted.

Lukashenka thanked Russia for its assistance in organising surveillance along the borders with Ukraine and Western countries using various technical systems. According to him, the issue was discussed recently with Vladimir Putin.

“Your systems are highly advanced, particularly in light of the conflict in Ukraine. Radars and similar equipment. They incorporate Russian experience and include a lot of Russian equipment. When President Putin and I met recently, we discussed this issue. He did well and promised to help us with this and that. We will need it, and we can see that we need it. We monitor the entire territory along the border. That is about 3,000 km if we include the western border and Ukraine. Of course, it must be covered by surveillance and monitoring systems. We are doing a fairly good job in this area,” Lukashenka said.
