Lithuania’s Prosecutor General’s Office has announced the launch of an investigation into a Lithuanian citizen suspected of working for Russian intelligence. The case was opened on the basis of materials provided by the State Security Department.
The State Security Department received information about an individual who had been gathering information using methods characteristic of Russian intelligence services. During operational activities, security officers collected evidence indicating that the suspect had independently established contact via the Telegram messaging app and carried out assignments from Russian intelligence services through intermediaries.
According to investigators, he collected information about military facilities in Lithuania, military equipment and its movements. In particular, he photographed and transmitted information about a Lithuanian Armed Forces battalion, a company manufacturing military radar and radiolocation systems, and the movement of military equipment at Vilnius Airport. He also shared materials containing images of military equipment and offered to collect similar information while in Belgium.
According to the investigation, the suspect was in contact with an employee of Russia’s Defence Ministry.
