Lithuanian border guards on Sunday recorded attempts by 50 migrants to cross the border from Belarus. This is the highest daily figure since the beginning of the year.
According to the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania, 11 people in two groups attempted to cross the border near Kapčiamiestis. They were detected in time and their attempt failed. The migrants retreated deeper into Belarusian territory upon seeing patrols.
A further 39 people managed to cross the border in the Lazdijai and Varėna districts. One group of 19 was spotted by Lithuanian border guards from a helicopter. Patrol units supported by dog handlers were deployed to search for them. All were detained. The migrants identified themselves as citizens of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. Only nine Afghans had passports, while the others had no documents.
The migrants were subsequently expelled from Lithuanian territory.
In Latvia, 26 migrants attempted to cross the border on Sunday. Polish border guards reported no attempts by migrants to cross the border from Belarus on April 24–26.
