Lithuania Reports Cyberattack on Interior Ministry Information System

A hybrid cyberattack was carried out against the information system of Lithuania’s Ministry of the Interior, the ministry said.

“On Thursday evening, September 24, Lithuanian Interior Minister Martynas Katelinas was informed of a cyberattack targeting the information system of the Information Technology and Communications Department within the Ministry of the Interior. The attack was detected using new security tools, and its effects were contained,” the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior reported.

According to preliminary information, the EPEKIS public services information system was breached. It is associated with the issuance of identity documents and other documents, consultations, and the provision of information to Lithuanian citizens and foreign nationals. EPEKIS has not been actively used since 2028 and currently serves as an archive. It stores data on foreign nationals who applied for Lithuanian citizenship. Most of the data in the system consists of foreign nationals’ first and last names without personal identification numbers.

The Ministry of the Interior said that unauthorised access to the system was promptly stopped. It has not been established whether the attackers transmitted any data.
