Independence is the main value for the Belarusian people. This was stated by head of the National аnti-сrisis management and deputy head of the United Transitional Cabinet Pavel Latushka in a statement marking the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Belarusian independence.
“August 25, 1991, is a defining date for the modern Belarusian state. On this day, the Supreme Council granted the Declaration of State Sovereignty, adopted a year earlier, the force of a constitutional law. The Belarusian people declared to the world: Belarus is independent.
Centuries of struggle by our ancestors for independence finally ended in victory, and sovereign Belarus took its place on the map of Europe. Belarusians finally gained their own home. A home in which no one would ever again have the right to oppress us, determine our path, impose foreign allies on us or prohibit us from speaking our native language.
Today, our common home has been seized by an enemy of Belarus. The dictator has turned independence, sacred to each of us, into a mere bargaining chip simply to retain his personal power. Our country is once again being subjected to attempts to place it under foreign control, while Belarusians are being deprived of the right to determine their own future.
Our main common task is to prevent this crime against the people. We have no right to hand over to hostile forces what generations of Belarusians fought for. Defending independence is our duty to our ancestors and to future generations, to whom we must pass on Belarus free and sovereign.
Independence is the main and inviolable value of the Belarusian people. More than 97% of Belarusians firmly seek to live in a sovereign state. And this is our common foundation. A foundation that will help Belarusians reach an understanding with one another, unite their efforts and return the country to its true owner — the Belarusian people.
