Latushka and Lithuania’s Justice Minister Discuss Holding the Lukashenka Regime Accountable Through the International Court of Justice

Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet and Head of the National Anti-Crisis Management Pavel Latushka held a series of meetings with Lithuanian officials.

At a meeting with Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas, the politician expressed gratitude for support for political prisoners deported to Lithuania and for Lithuania’s position on holding the Lukashenka regime accountable.

The speaker confirmed full support for Belarus’s democratic forces and noted that the Lithuanian parliament is always open to hosting events in support of the Belarusian democratic movement. He also stressed that parliament supports the Lithuanian government’s position on holding the regime accountable and continuing sanctions pressure.

The sides also discussed security threats to Lithuania posed by the Lukashenka regime.

Latushka informed the speaker about the results of the elections to the Coordination Council and about work aimed at holding Lukashenka accountable for crimes against the Belarusian people, the unlawful transfer of Ukrainian children and the act of aggression against Ukraine.

The meeting was also attended by Director of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Vilnius Office Dzianis Kuchynski and Deputy Head of the International Commission of the Coordination Council Iryna Khalopitsa.

At a meeting with Lithuania’s Justice Minister Rita Tamašunienė, Latushka thanked the country for referring the Belarus situation to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

“It is thanks to the Ministry of Justice and the Government of Lithuania that thousands of Belarusians affected by repression and deportation received hope for international justice.”, he said.

The sides also discussed progress in the ICC investigation and other mechanisms for bringing the regime to international accountability, including through the International Court of Justice.

Separately, they discussed other possibilities for holding the regime internationally accountable, including within the framework of the International Court of Justice. The discussion covered accountability both for crimes against Belarusians and for violations of international obligations toward Lithuania.
