Deputy head of Belarus’s United Transitional Cabinet and head of the National Anti-Crisis Management, Pavel Latushka, at a meeting with Lithuania’s ambassador to Poland, Valdemaras Sarapinas, stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka until it undertakes genuine, rather than cosmetic, domestic political changes.
The meeting was also attended by Coordination Council Speaker Artsiom Brukhan.
During the meeting, Latushka thanked Lithuania for its long-standing support of Belarusian democratic forces and democratic change in the country. He also expressed hope for continued strategic engagement by Lithuania with Belarusian democratic forces.
“Lithuania is for us one of the key allies in advancing democratic change in Belarus and supporting democratic forces that continue to fight for the freedom of the Belarusian people,” he said.
The meeting presented approaches to launching a national dialogue to overcome Belarus’s deep domestic political crisis through the use of a round-table mechanism.
Possible further steps to secure the release of political prisoners were also discussed. Particular attention was paid to advancing the issue of accountability for representatives of the Lukashenka regime.
Latushka and Brukhan informed the Lithuanian ambassador about preparations for elections to the Coordination Council, which are scheduled to take place from 11 to 17 May 2026. Latushka also thanked Lithuanian lawmakers for their support of the Coordination Council delegation’s activities in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe during its winter session held last week.
Latushka also briefed the Lithuanian side on Belarus’s economic situation amid sanctions, the United Transitional Cabinet’s press service said.
