Kyiv Discusses Procedures for Belarusians Seeking Ukrainian Citizenship

An interagency meeting was held in Kyiv to discuss the extension of temporary residence permits for foreigners in Ukraine during martial law, as well as procedures for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship in the absence of diplomatic missions of certain countries. Particular attention was paid to issues affecting Belarusians, according to Franak Viačorka, an adviser to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

Participants discussed options for the automatic or simplified extension of documents for foreigners living in Ukraine and assisting the country during Russia’s aggression. The Belarusian community was represented by Aliaksei Frantskevich, head of the public association “Belarusian Community of Ukraine”, whose organization is a member of the Council of Public Associations of National Minorities of Ukraine. Also participating in the discussion was Yaroslav Chornogor, Ambassador-at-Large of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry for Democratic Transformations and Cooperation with Democratic Forces and National Movements in Unfriendly Countries.

Viačorka noted that following the delegation’s visit to Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities had demonstrated political will to address the problems faced by Belarusians in Ukraine, and he expressed gratitude for that support.
