Khrenin Sees Military Cooperation as a Driver of Belarus-Myanmar Relations

Belarusian Defence Minister Viktar Khrenin held talks with Myanmar’s Defence Minister Tun Aung, who is visiting Minsk.

According to Khrenin, Myanmar is viewed as a strategic partner in Southeast Asia, and military cooperation could become the driving force behind bilateral relations.

“Thanks to the warm and friendly relations between Myanmar’s president Min Aung Hlaing and President of the Republic of Belarus Aliaksandr Lukashenka, and to the agreements reached during their meetings and visits, we can confidently speak about a great future for our bilateral relations.

As experience shows, cooperation in military and military-technical spheres often becomes the engine of the development of bilateral ties between states as a whole”, he said, adding that the sides are moving in the right direction.

Khrenin also noted the existence of constructive dialogue between Myanmar and Belarus’ State Authority for Military Industry. He touched on military education, cooperation in combat training, stressed the need to strengthen interaction through ideological work bodies and welcomed the exchange of experience in air defence.

Tun Aung stressed that geographical distance does not hinder relations between the two countries.

“Geographically, Belarus and Myanmar are located very far from one another. But what matters more is closeness of spirit: Belarus and Myanmar are friendly states. Our countries have established both economic cooperation and cooperation in the military sphere”, he said.

Aung invited Khrenin to visit Myanmar on an official visit. He expressed interest in exchanging experience in air defence, communications and the defence industry, and stated interest in sending military specialists to Belarus to develop cooperation in personnel training.

The meeting addressed not only bilateral military and military-technical cooperation but also economic matters in a broader context.
