The KGB says a “liberation army” is allegedly being prepared on European Union territory to seize power in Belarus, Sergey Terebov said.
“The preparation by the adversary of a forceful component to seize power, including by creating the so-called Belarusian Liberation Army on EU territory, poses significant risks to the country’s national security. According to the opponents’ plan, it should be formed to NATO standards and consist of three brigades with a total strength of between 9,000 and 15,000 people,” Terebov said at the Third CIS Conference on Countering Terrorism and Extremism being held in Dushanbe.
The KGB says the core of the “army” is believed to be “illegal armed formations” of Belarusians in Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania, which allegedly conduct combat training under the guise of sporting events. According to Terebov, counterintelligence escort and command of the formations is allegedly carried out by the SBU, while practical use is overseen by the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.
“The goal is an invasion of the Republic of Belarus. Key elements of training for such fighters include the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, including attack drones; urban combat; storming buildings and preparation to carry out sabotage and terrorist acts; fundamentals of mine-explosive work; and the manufacture of improvised explosive devices. Combat drones, small arms and a number of mock-ups of state administration facilities and key military sites are used for training. Preparation and training of armed formations is carried out on the territory of Ukraine and Poland, the Czech Republic and the Baltic states,” TASS quotes Terebov as saying.
The KGB had previously reported that Belarusians abroad were being prepared for terrorist acts on Belarusian territory. In December 2023 the head of the KGB, Ivan Tertel, said that seven chorugvy were operating in Poland for such preparation.
