KGB Adds 19-Year-Old Belarusian Convicted On Nine Charges To “Terrorist List”

Belarus’s State Security Committee has added 19-year-old Uladzislau Varonin to the list of persons “involved in terrorist activity.” He was previously convicted by the Homyel Regional Court under nine articles of the Criminal Code.

Varonin was charged with creating and participating in an extremist formation, hooliganism, inciting hatred, defamation of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, discrediting Belarus, rehabilitating Nazism, promoting terrorism, creating an organization for terrorist activity, and illegal actions involving personal data.

Security services claimed that Varonin was connected to the “extremist formations” “Pert” and “DUKH RUSI.”

Inclusion on the terrorist list means that money transfers to the prisoner are prohibited. At present, the list contains 1,425 people, around 700 of whom are Belarusians.

In February, Varonin was also added to the list of “extremists.”

Belarusian authorities regularly use accusations of extremism and terrorism to target political opponents and dissent in general.
