Andrei Ivanets, Belarus’s education minister, said the country is ready to become one of the key venues for international events aimed at promoting the Russian language. In his view, the Russian language represents a cultural code of a shared historical and cultural space.
He made the statement during his speech at the first ministerial conference of the International Organization for the Russian Language in Moscow, attended by representatives of Belarus, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
“Belarus, represented by the Ministry of Education and other ministries, is fully ready not only to support and participate in all initiatives that will be put forward within the framework of the International Organization for the Russian Language, but also to propose its own initiatives. We have something to share and something to offer, therefore we would very much like Belarus to become a venue for holding significant and important events aimed at promoting and expanding the use of the Russian language,” the minister said.
“As our president has repeatedly emphasized, the Russian language is just as native for Belarus as the Belarusian language. That is why the Belarusian people made their choice, and Russian is one of the state languages in our country,” he added.
Ivanets assured that Belarus would be among the most active participants in the organization.
“There is no doubt that the Russian language is not only the basis of our communication, but also our cultural code and, in many ways, the code of our shared history and cultural space,” the minister said.
During the conference, participants discussed the development of educational programs, the creation of digital resources, the organization of cultural and educational projects, and the exchange of teaching experience, the Belarusian Education Ministry said.
