A Hrodna resident went into the forest to pick mushrooms but found artillery shells instead. The Hrodna Regional Executive Committee’s Department of Internal Affairs reported this.

The shells were lodged directly in tree trunks. The man called law enforcement officers. The World War II-era ammunition was removed from the site and destroyed.

“The most likely scenario is that during the fighting, the ammunition was placed on the ground and lightly covered. It was then forgotten, and decades later a forest grew here and the shells were lifted by the growing trees,” police said.

The Department of Internal Affairs also noted that six years ago, an old shell was found embedded in the trunk of a poplar in Hrodna.
