Europe’s security cannot be ensured without resolving Belarus’s domestic political crisis, said Frédéric Petit, head of the parliamentary group “For a Democratic Belarus” and a member of the French National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee, at a meeting with Pavel Latushka, Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet and Head of the National Anti-Crisis Management.

The meeting focused on France’s strategy and role in the EU’s position on supporting Belarus’s democratic forces, regional security issues, Lukashenka’s role in supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the importance of continuing pressure on the Lukashenka regime, and approaches to securing the release of Belarusian political prisoners, the United Transitional Cabinet reported.

Petit noted that Belarus is part of the solution to the regional crisis and that Europe’s security cannot be ensured without resolving Belarus’s domestic political crisis.

Latushka presented a strategy toward Belarus: the United States is exerting pressure on the Lukashenka regime and securing the release of political prisoners in exchange for sanctions relief, while the European Union is using pressure and sanctions to achieve systemic change in Belarus.

The parties also discussed possible French support for holding a roundtable on a way out of Belarus’s domestic political crisis.
