The family of Belarusian politician and public figure Aliaksandr Milinkevich has announced the completion of a fundraising campaign for his treatment and rehabilitation. The news was shared by his wife, Ina Kuley, who wrote about it on social media.
According to her, the required amount was fully raised through donations via the zrzutka.pl platform, as well as through PayPal, a euro-denominated bank account and private transfers made through the Blik payment system. While the platform itself shows 82% of the target amount, all contributions combined covered 100% of the funds needed.
“Our family is incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed financially, shared the link on social media, or sent warm words of support,” Kuley said. She also thanked media outlets that helped spread information about the campaign and said updates on Milinkevich’s condition would continue to be published.
The politician’s family announced the urgent need for assistance several days ago. As reported by Reform.news, doctors discovered a blood clot blocking a carotid artery in November last year. Following surgery, Milinkevich suffered brain swelling and spent several weeks in intensive care in critical condition. Months of treatment for severe infections followed.
According to the family, the left side of his brain, which is responsible for speech, memory and cognitive functions, was not affected. However, the right side, which controls movement, sustained damage. The politician has lost the use of his left arm and continues to experience mobility problems in his legs. He requires constant medical supervision and intensive rehabilitation.
The 78-year-old Milinkevich was the united candidate of Belarus’ democratic forces in the 2006 presidential election and is a recipient of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize.
According to Kuley, the fundraising campaign on the zrzutka.pl platform will be closed on May 31.
