Representatives of EU member states at the European Council on Wednesday evening agreed on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia. The package is expected to be formally approved at the upcoming European Union summit.
“It is important to note that the EU has adopted the 19th package of sanctions against Russia. It includes new tough measures targeting Russian revenues. We will accelerate the gradual phase-out of Russian liquefied natural gas. As the EU, we are fully committed to ending supplies of this fossil fuel.
We are also tightening sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet, adding 117 new vessels to the list. In total, 564 ships have come under EU sanctions. Moreover, we are already working on the next package to further increase the pressure,” said David Van Weel, Denmark’s foreign minister and chair of the European Council.
Earlier this week, reports indicated that Hungary and Slovakia were ready to lift their blockade of the package after several provisions that had concerned Budapest and Bratislava were removed.
