Estonia’s Foreign Ministry Backs ICC Investigation Into Lukashenka Regime

Estonia supports the decision by the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to begin investigating crimes against humanity committed by the Lukashenka regime, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.

“Any form of violence, persecution or repression directed against a country’s own population must have serious consequences.

The systematic oppression and intimidation of any opposition by the regime is outrageous. Those responsible must be held accountable for all crimes against humanity,” Tsahkna wrote on social media platform X.

On March 12, the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court decided to open an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed in Belarus. The materials were submitted to the ICC by Lithuania in 2024. Lithuania asked the court to investigate cross-border crimes against humanity by the Lukashenka regime against the population of Belarus, as some of them were committed in Lithuania — a state party to the ICC. The case concerns actions by the Lukashenka regime that led to the deportation of citizens.
