Eight Children Discharged from Hospital After Mass Food Poisoning Incident in Barysau

Belarus’ Health Ministry has provided further details about the mass food poisoning incident involving children in Barysau.

According to the ministry, a total of 30 children aged between 2.8 and 8 years from 11 preschool institutions in the city sought medical assistance between the evening of June 2 and June 3. The children presented with repeated vomiting, abdominal pain and weakness.

Twenty-seven children were hospitalized with a preliminary diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis. Their condition upon admission was assessed as moderate. In three cases, parents signed written refusals of hospitalization.

All hospitalized children were examined by infectious disease specialists and a surgeon. Health officials reported positive progress in all cases, and by 6 p.m. on June 3, eight children had already been discharged from hospital.

The Health Ministry said the situation remains under its supervision. The causes of the illness are being investigated by the sanitary and epidemiological authorities. The Investigative Committee, acting on instructions from the Prosecutor General’s Office, is also conducting an inquiry.
