https://reform.news/en/eaeu-to-expand-railway-to-ports-in-leningrad-region/The EAEU will work on expanding the railway to ports in the Leningrad Region, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. said at a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council.
“We have made a joint decision to update the list of priority innovative projects in this area, including adding a new route to develop the railway section from Nevel to Gatchina and onward to seaports in northwestern Russia. Alongside the implementation of such infrastructure initiatives, it is very important to accelerate, as we discussed in detail, the introduction of electronic document management at maritime border checkpoints. This comprehensive approach will help increase the capacity of existing routes and, accordingly, the volume of freight traffic,” he said.
It should be noted that Nevel is located on the border with Belarus. Thus, the project concerns the expansion of the railway line used to transport freight from Belarus to ports in the Leningrad Region. Belarus and Russia had previously taken steps to increase the capacity of this line; in particular, additional passing loops were to be built on Russian territory. Belarusian Railway (BCh) reported that it had completed its part of the railway modernization on Belarusian territory.
