Draft Law On Digital Belarusian Ruble Adopted In First Reading

The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus has adopted in the first reading a draft law on the digital Belarusian ruble. The bill предусматривает amendments to the Banking Code, the Budget Code, and laws on currency regulation and control, payment systems and services, and anti-money laundering. The changes are required for the introduction of the digital ruble, which the National Bank plans to begin implementing in the second half of the year.

As explained by the press service of the House of Representatives, the digital Belarusian ruble will represent an additional form of non-cash money, which will be recorded not in bank accounts but in digital accounts at the National Bank.

The National Bank expects that the digital national currency will simplify cross-border payments, improve control over budget funds, and more.

The National Bank will organize the operation of the digital Belarusian ruble payment system, including the digital ruble platform. It will also be granted authority to oversee the digital currency.
