Death Toll From Venezuela Earthquake Rises to 164

Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez said the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 164. She stressed that the figures are not yet final. According to Rodríguez, at least 971 people have also been injured.

Rescue operations are continuing. Numerous buildings have collapsed across the country.

The two initial powerful earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck 40 seconds apart and were followed by at least 30 aftershocks.

Foreign rescue teams are expected to arrive in Venezuela. Rodríguez also said she is discussing with the International Monetary Fund the creation of an economic recovery fund with initial financing of $200 million.
